Our CR 17 Bridge over US 33 & Norfolk Southern Railroad for Elkhart County, Indiana has won a 2026 Honor Award from ACEC Indiana!

The CR 17 Pedestrian Bridge is a standout example of engineering ingenuity and community impact. Lochmueller used prefabricated construction, uncommon for pedestrian bridges of this scale, fabricating six massive sections offsite and completing a precision overnight lift with minimal disruption to traffic and rail operations. The road and railroad remained open throughout most of construction, and the final placement required only a brief 15-minute pause in train traffic, and road closures were limited to an hour or two overnight. This approach avoided delays for commuters and freight while demonstrating a creative solution for building over active transportation corridors.

The result is a striking, grade-separated crossing that transforms a once-risky route into a safe, seamless connection for pedestrians and cyclists. By linking major trails and civic destinations, the bridge enhances regional mobility. More than infrastructure, it’s a lasting investment in safety, sustainability, and the power of engineering to elevate everyday life.

The project’s innovative delivery exceeded the client’s goals for safety, schedule, and community connectivity. The new bridge provides a vital link between the new courthouse and pedestrian path west of US 33 and the Maple Heart Trail, strengthening access and supporting Elkhart County’s vision for a more connected, active future.
