Kokomo Peak Excess Flow Treatment Facility

We are excited to announce that the Kokomo Peak Excess Flow Treatment Facility (PEFTF) project, for the City of Kokomo, has been honored with a 2025 Merit Award from ACEC Indiana!

The City of Kokomo contracted with Lochmueller Group to enhance its Wastewater Treatment Plant to complete one phase of the Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) Long Term Control Plan (LTCP) and meet IDEM regulations. The project included a wet weather treatment facility and a 24-inch force main. 

The project utilized innovative technology for the wet weather treatment. The chemically enhanced high-rate clarification system uses hydrodynamic separation technology and chemical disinfection. It was less expensive, less maintenance-intensive, and less complex, with very few moving parts.

An original approach during the design of the project was also applied. There were two different types of treatment systems, and the operations were simplified by combining the two systems into one. By keeping the treatment technology at the existing wastewater treatment facility, it decreased maintenance costs and operational complexity.

Kokomo already had a Peak Excess Flow Treatment Facility that could not handle the additional flows from the future CSO LTCP Projects and would ultimately cause discharges to the creek. Therefore,  increased wet weather treatment was necessary as per the City’s CSO LTCP. This project not only met these requirements but also increased the functionality and flexibility of the wastewater treatment plant to successfully treat wet weather flows and meet Indiana State regulations.

The primary goal of this project is to improve water quality in local streams and creeks by reducing untreated overflows, significantly benefitting the environment and the community.
