TheLloyd4U project will use innovative intersections to make the Lloyd Expressway safer and more efficient. The Public Involvement team at Lochmueller understands unfamiliar changes can be intimidating. Outreach on TheLloyd4U has aimed to familiarize stakeholders with terms like Displaced Left Turns and Boulevard Left Turns. Understanding how these turns work and why they’re needed will help smooth the transition once construction is complete.

Through public involvement efforts, Lochmueller and INDOT have built relationships with key stakeholders throughout the life of TheLloyd4U, a project with the goal of improving safety and mobility along the Lloyd Expressway corridor while maintaining accessibility to adjacent businesses and residences.

Lochmueller is committed to building project understanding while keeping a consistent line of communication for timely and relevant information. The Public Involvement Plan (PIP) was created to serve as a blueprint for action, including goals and objectives, key audiences, strategies, tactics, and protocols. Communications were developed to build project awareness, engage the public in providing feedback, and to create familiarity with the innovative solutions being used for TheLloyd4U improvements.

These strategic communications have supported every aspect of the project, from initial planning and as construction nears. Multiple avenues for public and stakeholder coordination have been utilized to reach a large and diverse group of area residents, businesses, motorists, and other stakeholders. To build familiarity, conceptual videos were developed to allow drivers to visualize how the new intersections will work. A stand-alone website at TheLloyd4U.com serves as a repository for the project where visitors can easily find information, learn more about planned improvements, and share input on the project. Various other forms of outreach tools were used such as social media, e-mail and text alert updates, fact sheets and handouts, questionnaires, presentations, and photo and video. The virtual outreach opportunities have made it easier for a larger number of those involved to be able to easily engage with the project.

Collecting feedback and educating the public and stakeholders is essential to the success of any transportation project. Lochmueller has provided clear, consistent, and strategic communications that has encouraged understanding and engagement.
