Olive Street & Sample Street Improvements

Location:
South Bend, Indiana
Client:
St. Joseph County
Service Line:
Construction Administration

Lochmueller partnered with a local consulting firm to provide construction inspection and material testing services for the Olive Street and Sample Street overpass intersection. The overpasses, both spanning five sets of railroad tracks, were rehabilitated. Bridge work also included 1,400 feet of decorative concrete railing and lighting.

The existing traffic signal, located at the busy Sample Street and Olive Street intersection, was removed and replaced with a roundabout to improve traffic flow. The 1.05 miles of roadway reconstruction consisted of removing concrete pavement and installing new storm sewer and a 36-inch underdrain system. New concrete curb-and-gutter and asphalt pavement was constructed as well as new sidewalk and stamped concrete in the roundabout islands. New lighting was installed and over 200 trees were planted.

Due to the high traffic volume, the Sample Street overpass was constructed in two phases, maintaining traffic into downtown South Bend. After demolition of the first phase, unforeseen deterioration of some of the pre-stressed concrete beams was found. The onsite inspection team worked quickly with St. Joseph County, the designer, and contractor to come up with a repair plan to avoid delays.
