Faced with a high-traffic intersection with a reported crash rate 15 times the expected rate, Lochmueller designed a compact, five-legged roundabout to improve safety, traffic operations, and multimodal connectivity at Gordon Road, US 421, and SR 39. Located near SR 39’s crossing of the Tippecanoe River, the project improves traffic operations and safety while expanding pedestrian accessibility. The design also supports the community’s long-term transportation needs by creating a more efficient connection for motorists, pedestrians, trucks, and agricultural traffic.
The constrained site and unusual approach and departure angles required a compact design capable of accommodating large trucks and farm equipment. Lochmueller incorporated mountable splitter islands with full-depth concrete pavement to provide safe turning movements and long-term durability. The team also navigated right-of-way acquisition from 10 parcels, multiple underground utility relocations, environmental requirements, and coordination with City of Monticello Sewer. A comprehensive Section 106 review and environmental analysis helped streamline the NEPA process, protecting the project schedule and budget.
Construction began in 2024 and was successfully completed in late summer 2025, delivering an improved intersection that addresses operational and safety needs while providing lasting value to White County and the surrounding community. Through careful coordination and practical engineering solutions, Lochmueller delivered outstanding results that met the client’s objectives. The project also creates future community benefits by establishing a pedestrian connection to City of Monticello park facilities and reusing the City Park Loop alignment for a cost-effective trail extension.
