Our Bridge 56 Emergency Replacement project in Porter County has received a 2025 State Finalist Award by the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) Indiana! This award recognizes Lochmueller’s ability to deliver complex infrastructure solutions with minimal delays and maximum public benefit.

The bridge, located on CR 1050 S over Pleasant Township Ditch in Kouts, Indiana, was abruptly closed on May 23, 2022, after failing a routine inspection due to imminent structural failure. Lochmueller leveraged Indiana’s Rural Bridge Exemption, eliminating a time-consuming Construction in a Floodway Permit and adjusting the design to stay within the existing right-of-way, avoiding costly land acquisition delays. By selecting a spread prestressed concrete box beam superstructure, the team reduced construction time while ensuring long-term durability.

The bridge’s closure disrupted emergency services, school transportation, and local businesses, making speed a priority. Lochmueller’s innovative approach allowed the project to be completed in just two years, significantly faster than typical bridge replacements. The project’s success demonstrates how engineering ingenuity can balance efficiency, safety, and sustainability.
